Sir John Lavery.
John Lavery a Belfast man
in religious turmoil life began.
Protestant, Catholic trouble
seemingly never ending struggle.
Eighteen fifty six the year
the mercantile act made clear.
Not much about his youth
difficult to find truth.
Attended a Glasgow academy to start
then off to Paris to study French art.
Returned to Scotland, the Glasgow
School
Art Nouveau breaks the conventional
rule.
A commission to paint Victoria’s
visit
a success, described by some as
exquisite.
Then off to London for portraiture
his talent making him secure.
Painting boats, planes, airships as
well
firmly established in the artistic
cartel.
A Knighthood must have made his day
we hardly hear him mentioned today.
