Lieutenant Colonel H. Jones VC. OBE.

Putney, Wandsworth his place of birth
nineteen forty he graced this earth.
Father being an American artist
his mother a nurse and altruist.

thus completing academic knowledge.
Royal Military academy nextmind and body military flexed.

First the Devon and Dorset Regiment
a Second Lieutenant, lucid, acquiescent.

his friend Captain Robert Nairac slain.

Several years and an OBE
then Jones parted company.
The Parachute Regiment called
Lieutenant-Colonel Jones enthralled.

The Falklands war, his own command
off to war in a distant land.
The politicians said, “ take Goose Green”
a place 2 Para had never seen.

The Argentinians well dug in
eleven trenches, what a din!
Machine gun fire rakes the air
come up the hill if you dare.

So up the hill 2 para went
their Commander would not relent.
He led the way into the fray
falling, dead, on the way.

Goose Green fell to guts and gore
Falklands, Argentine no more.
The war was won on the ground
by men of merit, true, profound.
