Kirby Muxloe Castle.

Kirby Muxloe Castle.

I spent hours playing there as a child

hide and seek, much beguiled

We built a raft at the rear

crossed the moat to commandeer.

School holidays were the best

blood hill on its crest.

A stones throw from the castle

in the evening we'd do battle.

Cowboys and Indians the usual start

not that you could tell apart.

Catapults, mud balls ammunition

load up and take position.

“At them when they cross the moat

keep firing sink their boat”

No one ever really won

by crikey, it was good fun.

Sometimes I went alone

around the moat I'd roam.

Water hens at the base of reeds

buntings flutter in the breeze.

Kirby Castle was the home of Lord Hastings.

Richard 111 executed him without trial.
