Bradley Wiggins

Bradley Wiggins.

Ghent in Belgium his life began

mother English father Australian.

Father left mum, Bradley just two

mother bidding Ghent adieu.

Kilburn in London her mothers flat

just one more move after that.

Maida Vale an affluent place

the Wiggins quick to embrace.

Bradley at first football mad

seemingly just a passing fad.

On TV he watched a cycle race

Chris Boardman was the ace.

The Olympic Games in ninety two

gold the colour that Boardman drew.

Bradley loved the cycling game

wanting to win and entertain.

Seven Olynpic medals won

four gold and a silver one.

Two bronze, not to forget

Bradleys not finished yet.

A Knighthood and world fame

easily our best cycling name.

His father was a cyclist too

somewhat further down the queue.

British Paras, a rough start.

The Russians had them Germans too,
not really something new.
Russia repelled an Afghan attack
in the twenties, that far back.

Churchill started Britain’s call
bothered by the Belgians fall.
Hitler and his lightening war
paratroops shocked even more.

Surprise attack the German theme
synchronized, tough and keen.
Then the mighty French fell
blitzkrieg tactics gave them hell.

The Brits retreat to Dunkirk
ignominious defeat a cert.
It didn't break Churchill’s heart
not the end, just the start.

“ I want five thousand paratroop men
thank you very much gentlemen”
He only got five hundred though
inexperience began to show.

Ringway Manchester they trained
a few killed, equipment blamed.
Recruitment was very slow
a change to break the status quo.

Lt.Col. Strange, moved to oneside
a little loss of pride.
Wing Commander Newnham
installed as the new man.

Captive balloons brought in
jumping from them helping.
Instructors with megaphones
directing to selected zones.

Churchill got his five thousand men
the lions roar had worked again.
Much equipment designed, tested.
the airborne smock liked and attested.

Their first attack on Italian soil
an aquaduct they tried to spoil.
One man arrested and shot,
all captured, they got the lot.

Nineteen sixteen, Amsterdam, New York

for Jews no cakewalk.

Father denied work in the mills

becoming a rag man to pay the bills.

Issur Danielovitch, Kirk was born

a chilly December his first yawn.

Newspaper boy one of his tasks

plus selling mill workers snacks.

High School and school plays

developing his acting craze.

One thing he always knew

a stage career he would pursue.

Enlisting for the second world war

discharged with war injuries in forty four.

Returning to New York, happy days

radio, commercials and plays.

Lauren Bacall a guide and mentor

his movie screen activator.

Introduced Kirk to Hal. B.Wallis

screen tested showing promise.

Huge success in tough guy films

signing contracts no qualms.

Actor, producer, director, writer

nothing ever seemed to deter.

A sever stroke in ninety six

diggng into his bag of tricks.

Slowly finding his seventh heaven

still with us at ninety seven.

Leonora Carrington

A Chorley, Lancashire lass
family wealthy, upper class.
Nineteen seventeen her birth
the first of four to emerge.

Educated by governesses, tutors,
presented at court for admiring suitors.
A rebellious girl, freethinking,wild,
not yet ready for court or aisle.

Instead, Chelsea School of Art
more interested, earnestly part.
Surrealism her chosen genre.
Max Ernst a surrealist czar.

They lived in France for a while
Max arrested over his artistic style.
Considered decadent by the Gestapo
Leonora devastated by her arrested beau.

A marriage of convenience next
her life a little more complex.
Mexico she eventually arrive
her art all ready recognised.

Marrying Imre Weisz photographer
seemingly this marriage good for her.
She lived to be a ripe old age
ninety four she left this earthly stage.

Her 1947 painting 'The Giantess' sold in New York for $1,482,500 (£1,080,000).

The silent ones

Past silent Bishops in the Lords
men went to war drawing swords,
They trespassed on foreign soil
plunder, rob, strip, despoil.
The same today, silent still
When Blair's Government urged to kill.
Military men, land, sea, and air
Blair arrogant, arbitrary, doctrinaire.
Still Iraq in a mess
sectarian divisive distress.
At least Saddam was secular
independent and regular.
What do silent Bishops do
just pray and join the wages queue?
Cuts indeed and quick about
lets have the frocked ones out.

millions worldwide now enjoy.

January

Nature's taking winters rest
often scenic smartly dressed.
A veil of snow, still, calm,
branches laden a weighty balm.

A pigeon flaps disturbing peace,
agitated, a small caprice.
Clods of snow hit the ground
the copse echoes a thudding sound.

Not that many birds around
a blackbird its regular round.
The magpie a haughty cavalier
it always seems in good cheer.

Great tits come and go
usually a communal show.
A dreadful rainy sodden year
just a hint that spring is near.

My clematis and only evergreen
a truly heartening scene.
By Christmas buds began to grow
now tiny purple petals show.

Ilkley moor bah tat

where the heck is that?

West Yorkshire I've been told

without a hat its cold.

Near here our hero was born

he'd often lay on the lawn.

Watching the birds eat and play

this sort of thing made his day.

A lover of natures natural things

autumn, winter, lovely springs.

Gardening, making things grow

fork, spade, trowel, barrow.

A good days graft he seemed to like

how nature worked, mentally bright.

At Kew Gardens a claim to fame

as staff trainer he made his name.

Gardening journalism next

then several other projects.

Novelist and Broadcaster

A sort after connoisseur.

In speech honest, opine

moaners told to toe the line.

His Mum and Dads mental grit

Please be quiet and get on with it.

no thoughts of fashion at all.

Leaving school at fifteen years,

not outshining his academic peers.

Cycling his preferred game

a yellow jersey and fame.

This dream was soon dashed

when bicycle and he crashed.

A lengthy spell hospitalised,

cycling pondered, agonised.

friendly with students in art

Paul makes a fresh start.

Studying design at night school

opening a boutique staying cool.

Behind the scenes a crash course

an enthusiastic dark horse.

Pattern making and tailoring

a keen grounding in everything.

A Paris show with some success

the British look acquiesced .

Now a famous man worldwide

a leader and fashion guide.

Conventional with a twist

many thousands can't resist.

Zig Zag

zig zag

in 1917 balfour declared
tormented palestine could be shared
both sides gave a promising nod
combine talents unease be shod

a palestinian majority didn’t stop war
retaliatary acts they both stood for
husseini tried his arab rise
fleeing to hitler was his demise

peel and woodhead tried their plot
a jewish minority was their lot
a foot in the sand was their way
then lord moyne lehi did slay

the u.n. issues its report
equal division was it’s resort
the jews gave a reluctant yes
break through here the world would bless

not so it seems in arab eyes
reluctance could be their demise
opportunity indeed here was missed
to attend the table submit their list

resolution 181 was the way
equal opportunity equal play
jerusalem under protective care
till arab and jew learned to share
he gun- bomb get publicity yes
but not to clear this awful mess
this type of war will come to an end
with both sides learning to yield bend

your war is spreading across the globe
it needs restricting to your abode
9/11 proved nothing at all
american people still stand tall

the table as usual will clear the air
will end your torment and despair
181 a way to success
now the table you must address

Richard Branson

I remember well the year of his birth

the Eagle comic, three penny worth.

Dan Dare believable, things achievable

Digby, lazy, sleepy, debatable.

Freebooter a Grand national win,

me, no money on him.

From the crypt of a church business began

Student, making Branson a popular man.

Student magazine advertising pop records

brought him great financial rewards.

Seventy one his first record sale

His Oxford St. shop the public would hail.

Virgin Records launched in seventy two

for twenty years it expanded and grew.

Eventually sold to EMI

this sale made him cry.

Planes and trains more success

seemingly never under stress.

A few islands, isolated, wild

not to bad for a dyslexic child.

were Viv begins her artistic mode.
A silversmithing and fashion course
one term, then quitting this source.

A primary school teacher she became
dabbling in the designer jewellery game.
Selling at a stall in Portobello Road
her business acumen showed.

Married for just three years
ended when Macolm Mclaran appeared.
Council flat in Clapham they would abide
Vivian never becoming his bride.

Punk mad at at one time
in thought dress and design.
A boutique called let It Rock
they opened just to shock.

Viv always outshone her men
craftily consoling them.
Sunglasses, dress, bling, shoes
continuously in the news.

Probably the best in the world today
her creations on worldwide display.
Married again for the second time
she claims she's yet to reach her prime.
