Leonora Carrington

A Chorley, Lancashire lass
family wealthy, upper class.
Nineteen seventeen her birth
the first of four to emerge.

Educated by governesses, tutors,
presented at court for admiring suitors.
A rebellious girl, freethinking,wild,
not yet ready for court or aisle.

Instead, Chelsea School of Art
more interested, earnestly part.
Surrealism her chosen genre.
Max Ernst a surrealist czar.

They lived in France for a while
Max arrested over his artistic style.
Considered decadent by the Gestapo
Leonora devastated by her arrested beau.

A marriage of convenience next
her life a little more complex.
Mexico she eventually arrive
her art all ready recognised.

Marrying Imre Weisz photographer
seemingly this marriage good for her.
She lived to be a ripe old age
ninety four she left this earthly stage.

Her 1947 painting 'The Giantess' sold in New York for $1,482,500 (£1,080,000).
