His parents devout Hasidic Jews,
Youngest of six with lots of shmooze,
Day after day at the crack of dawn,
His father the synagogue to pray, mourne.
His family no artistic talents at all,
Education limited to Jews like Chagall,
Mother pays for a Russian high school,
So avoiding the exclusionary rule.
Chagall not accepting conventional style,
Modernist, eclectic, versatile,
Travelling much to look and learn,
From self assertion he would not turn.
In France he quickly came to fame,
Ignoring the French cubist came,
A ripe colour gift, fresh, unashamed,
Masterly, controlled, untamed.
