Dibnah

1938-2004. Fred Dibnah.

Not the usual broadcasting type,
left the army without a stripe,
a fag and beer man, common, bluff,
two wives ran off, had enough.
Chimney stacks, steeplejacks,
steam engines, old shacks,
pits, holes, mine shafts,
Victorian skills and crafts.
Struggling to make ends meet,
never admitting to defeat,
then the BBC came near,
a suggestion, a talk, a beer.
So starts a television career,
  Fred articulate, intelligent, sincere,
interesting detailed facts,
millions his laid back style attracts.
About nineteen shows in all,
super stardom for this odd ball,
then cancer, Fred did his best,
alas, Tonge Cemetery laid to rest.
