Hardly an auspicious start to life,
Bute Street built for trouble, strife,
Her family large, a little wild,
when father made himself reviled.

The police arrested and made it stick,
their father getting five years nick,
Deportation followed his time,
Shirley to young, unaware of crime.

Mother a toughie, intelligent too,
I think we'll move and start anew,
Mother knew when to duck and dive,
my kids are mine, they will survive.

It's got to be mother that Shirley likes best,
always there, passing the test,
Thanks for that Shirley you sure came through,
diamonds are forever, that's your mother and you.
